Your first rental and your first listing in the United States

On BorrowSphere you rent by the day what you do not want to own, lend out what sits idle, and buy or sell used, always with local pickup. The once-a-year hammer drill is the usual start.

The agreement is between you and the other person, not with BorrowSphere. The platform moves no money, holds no deposit and insures nothing; it gives you a profile, ratings, dated messages, a calendar and a printable Loan Agreement.

Account, Address and Profile

Sign up with email and password, Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google, confirm the email, and pick a private or business account. Add a photo and display name; an empty profile costs the first request. Your address is required before your first listing: it feeds the distance search, stays private, and places you only roughly. Your star average starts public at zero, so one cheap first rental pays.

Your First Rental

Search by free text or the category tree, set the filter to Borrow or Buy, and set Distance to 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 or 1000 miles, or to Everywhere. Sort by Relevance, Price, Distance or Newest, save the search so new results find you, bookmark listings, follow owners. Pick your dates in the calendar, hit Send Request, then settle the rest in the chat; the owner accepts or declines.

• Photos and description — capped at 500 characters, so ask about model year and extras.
• Rating count, not stars alone — five stars from two rentals prove little.
• Distance and pickup time — nothing ships here, so both must fit your day.
• The deposit — how much, in what form, and how it comes back.
• Every price field — Price per rental adds to Price per day.

Pickup and Return

The Pickup

Many police departments run a safe exchange zone, a lit lot under cameras; not all do, so check yours online. Otherwise meet in the lender's driveway in daylight. Settle payment first: cash, Venmo, Zelle or Cash App. Zelle is irreversible, and so is a friends and family transfer on Venmo or PayPal. Test the item, count accessories, take dated photos, and bring the printed Loan Agreement: Lender, Borrower, Name, Proof of Identity, Start of Rental, End of rental, Price, Deposit, Identified Defects, Date / Signature.

The Return

Late back and you owe a late fee: it runs per day, not per night, and a started day counts in full. Return it clean and charged or fueled, with photos again. You rate each other one to five stars plus text, only after the transaction closes.

Your First Listing

Tap Create Advert, choose Lend or Sell, upload photos and mark a cover image. The optional automatic listing builder drafts the rest, but form data and images go to OpenAI. Title 5 to 60 characters, description max 500, a category from the tree such as Garden & Outdoor, and at least one price field.

• Price per day — your anchor; the rest follows.
• Price per weekend and per week — Friday to Sunday is the busy window.
• Price per rental — wear and cleaning, however long it runs.
• Deposit — you collect it and hand it back yourself.
• Zero is allowed — it reads Free, or To give away on a sale.

The rental counter at Home Depot and Lowe's is your reference, and a private rate sits under it. As a rule the listed price stands: daily rates are rarely haggled, and only pricey sales carry OBO, or best offer. Every listing shows a status — In preparation, Active, In review, Inactive, Expired, Archived — and expires with advance notice.

Money, Safety and Limits

• You pay each other directly — no checkout, no escrow, no buyer protection.
• Stay in the chat — pressure toward WhatsApp or text, gift cards up front and pickup for a friend are red flags.
• Call your insurer — homeowners and renters insurance exclude business use.
• Report and Block — ratings come only from closed transactions.

What Changes From State to State

Whether sales tax applies to a rental is a state question for your state Department of Revenue, not a federal agency. BorrowSphere moves no money and issues no 1099-K, though a payment app can. Your lease, HOA or condo board may limit handoffs, storage or business use in the driveway. Demand follows the climate: snow blowers up north, generators on the coast before hurricane season, lawn gear in spring. Even counter rates swing between metro and small town.

Your First Week

Finish the profile, save a search, rent something cheap nearby, return it on time and rate. Then post your own listing with a cover image and a Price per day. The deal is yours and theirs; the money moves directly.
